Opera Magazine: Joyce El-Khoury’s Opera City is Amsterdam
June 15, 2017
Soprano Joyce El-Khoury is featured in the July issue of Opera Magazine (UK). She has guest written the ‘My Opera City’ column. She chose Amsterdam.
If I close my eyes, I can see the boats, the water, the bustling streets, and of course…the bicycles! When I first visited Amsterdam in 2011, I was a young singer just starting out, on the tail end of a busy audition tour. Upon my arrival, I was struck by a strong sense of déjà vu. It was like I had been there before; I felt as though I were home. The history, the art, the music are evident everywhere. The city is an inspiring architectural marvel with a fascinating and organic blend of old and new, exhibiting a freedom of expression that is contagious.
Not only did my return in 2013 feel like a homecoming in this beloved city, it was a reunion with a familiar Verdi role: Violetta in La Traviata. My debut with the Dutch National Opera (DNO) wearing the signature Willy Decker red frock was a night to remember – it was unexpected and wild, mimicking the exciting, mystical energy of this fascinating city.” -Joyce El-Khoury, read the full column in the digital issue or get your print edition on June 20!
